SF, Ep. 17

April 10, 2009—A new twist for Ep. 17: the LDM partnered with the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll enthusiasts of the Rebel Reading Series (MySpace.com/rebelreadingseries) in a tantalizing celebration of literature and vice at Elbo Room, as Lorelei Lee out-vibrator raced Blag Dahlia to score the Literary Death Match championship.

The crowd is dazzled. The night kicked off with music journalist Michael Layne Heath who dazzled with an energetic poetry-short piece-poetry combination, and was soon followed by porn-performer/short story writer Lorelei Lee. The judges--conceptual genius Jonathon Keats, lead singer of Lilofee Kimi Recor and Benjamin L. Perez (author of The Evil Queen: A Pornolexicology)--struggled to name a winner, but finally flipped mental coins, and the 2-1 vote went to Lee.

After a brief intermission, the second round kicked off with Jason Myers, the Mission novelist who’s slattern tale had the filled room simultaneously laughing and cringing. He was followed by the founder of the Dwarves, Blag Dahlia, who read a layered sexual tale with brilliant presence, splitting the crowd, and winning the judges in another split decision.

The finale featured an LDM first: a vibrator race, curated by the Rebel Reading Series braintrust. Put on an incline, Lee’s bulbous blue member narrowly out-shuddered Dahlia’s slim pink combatant en route to the finish line, snaring her a piece of LDM history, and a victory that sent ripples through San Francisco.
